Gulli Danda

Gulli Danda  – also called Gilli Danda, Luka-Duka, and Danda-Gulli. (India); Gulli Dander, Gilli Danda (Pakistan); Gilli Danda, Danda-Gulli (Bangladesh); Gilli Danda, Dandi-Biyo (Nepal); and Ellan-Gilli (Sri Lanka) – is an ancient sport originating from South Asia, possibly over 2500 years ago to the Indus Valley Civilization (3300-1300 BCE), and is still widely played throughout South Asia. It is a popular traditional sport especially in Pakistan and India which is also found as far north as the Mediterranean and as far east as Southeast Asia. It was a precursor to cricket in South Asia. The game is played with two sticks: a large one called a danda, which is used to hit a smaller one, the gulli. It bears many similarities to bat and ball games such as cricket and baseball.

 

Gameplay:

  2. Players take turns hitting a small smaller stick (usually made of wood or plastic) with a long stick or bat (called a “danda”).
  3. The objective is to hit the smaller stick as far as possible.
